March MATness!

March MATness: A Celebration of Classical Pilates

Every March, the global Pilates community comes together for March MATness, a month-long celebration of Joseph Pilates’ original mat exercises. This movement highlights the power of Pilates mat work and its ability to transform strength, mobility, and control—no equipment required. At Kore Pilates, we’re embracing the challenge with a daily movement practice, guiding you through each classical mat exercise to help you build consistency, deepen your practice, and connect with the essence of Pilates.

A Brief History of Pilates

Pilates, originally called Contrology, was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Inspired by a mix of gymnastics, yoga, and functional movement, Pilates created a method that focused on core strength, spinal health, and total-body conditioning. Initially designed to rehabilitate injured soldiers and dancers, Pilates has since evolved into a globally respected practice known for its precision, control, and mind-body connection.

Why Mat Work?

I know we love our reformer practice, but a moment for matwork too. ..matwork is the foundation of the method. It challenges the body using just gravity, body weight, and deliberate movement, making it one of the most accessible, effective, and versatile forms of exercise.

Benefits of Mat Pilates:

Builds Core Strength – Every exercise engages the deep abdominal muscles, improving posture and stability

Improves Flexibility & Mobility – Moves like The Saw and The Swan Dive enhance spinal articulation and range of motion.

Enhances Control & Coordination – Exercises like The Teaser and Control Balance require precision and focus, refining movement patterns.

Accessible Anytime, Anywhere – No need for fancy equipment—just a mat and a willingness to move!
